Lo vostro fermo dir fino ed orrato

approva ben ciò bon ch’om di voi parla,

di vostra loda intera nominarla;

ché il vostro pregio in tal loco è poggiato, 5
che propiamente om nol poria contarla:
però qual vera loda al vostro stato
crede parlando dar, dico disparla.

Dite ch’amare e non essere amato

Your fine, and firm, and greatly honored verse
proves all the good things said about you true,
and even more, so that it is indeed
quite arduous to sing your fullest praise.

On such a height is all your merit placed, 5
no one could do it justice with his words,
for, if by merely speaking one intends
to tell your entire worth, one lessens it.

You say that loving and not being loved
by far is the worst suffering of Love; 10
but many say that greater griefs exist.

Therefore, I humbly beg your lofty thought
to be so kind as to reveal to me
if what those people say is true or not.

Though, O my friend, I hardly know your name,
or where the one who writes to me was born,
your knowledge, this I know, has such great fame
that none of those I know can boast as much.

For it is possible to recognize, 5
simply by talking, if a man is wise;
but when I have to praise one I know not,
‘tis hard for this my tongue to tell my thought.

My friend (for having loved I know full well),
let me assure you that the one who loves, 10
and is not loved, endures the greatest grief.

This suffering is most tyrannical,
and of all other aches is called the chief:
hence comes the anguish Love gives to us all.

Dante Alighieri’s Reply: Though, O my friend, I hardly know your name / (Non canoscendo, amico, vostro nomo)

After an exchange of praises and admiration for each other in the quatrain of the respective sonnets, Dante’s reply confirms that the lover who is not loved suffers the greatest pain of Love.
